Red Eye Tree Frogs Arrive!

Finally, the pair of red eye leaf frogs have arrived. I took a picture but you can hardly see one and the other not at all.

They arrived around 8:10pm tonight. Can you see them? One is visible and the other you can see the orange foot pads.

They are tiny. One of them is a lighter green and the other is darker. I suspect although too early to tell, that one is female and one is male. From what I have seen the males tend to be darker.

I named them Billy and Ted. aka ‘Bill and Ted’ and no this isn’t related to the movie, it was just a coincidence I swear. They look great and seeing one walk was good.

I’ll try and add more photos but my camera won’t zoom in.

Peace.

Let’s See if She Can…

I’m now pairing up my royal pythons once again after unsuccessfully pairing them at the end of 2020. My female did not get gravid or lay eggs, but I know she started to develop follicles and such.

You can see the female in the above picture. She is an enchi royal python. The reason I want her to breed is so that I can experience and witness the process. I also bought her knowing that she mated successfully before.

I will say this, I know I talked about avoiding breeding and such to stop contributing to the problem of people not caring for animals, but I have intention to keep the offspring and keep a small breeding project. Any surplus of snakes will be sold. The average amount of eggs that royal python lay is between 6 and 8, which is pushing it. I also have room to house them. On a side note, I am hoping my new frogs will arrive next week as the tank is ready for them.

I am only pairing her with my wildtype royal python. Again, simply to see if she will get gravid. She is old enough, has laid before – with previous owner – and is of sufficient weight. I have paired them 2 times in the last week and I believe both resulted in a successful lock, or intercourse.

Let’s hope she can and let’s hope that there are baby snakes sometime later this year. I am pairing slightly later than I hoped, but from research they will breed at any time during the year in captivity. In fact it makes sense to breed now, as that would allow eggs to be laid in spring giving them the best chance of survival.

Peace.

My setup is almost complete

My vivarium arrived today in a massive box that I could sleep in. The vivarium was only 18x18x24” (45x45x60cm). I had my plants and soil etc ready to go in.

Vivarium surprisingly came with an artificial background.
You can see the plants in the tank. The light is the UVB above.

The tank has a mesh top ideal for placing a UVB above. I am using Arcadia 7% UVB shade dweller. I am using bioactive soil for frogs, with a base layer or drainage layer of small stones. Separated by a thin sheet of something I cannot remember the name of! I think I should have added more stones to the drainage layer… There is also plenty of moss which will help keep it humid, and some very broad leaves mixed in the soil, which will help with feeding the clean up crew which has yet to arrive. The clean up crew are things like springtails and woodlice which will enrich the soil by digesting waste material. A self cleaning tank.

Humidity is key with tree frogs, the red eye tree frogs in particular, coming from central America/south America. I do have more vine plants coming which will allow them to rest high up. I actually ordered this tank when I realised that the 30x30x30cm tank I already ordered would be too small. I was right, it was quite small but ideal for my juvenile tarantula. New Tarantula called Frank courtesy of my cousin, thanks!

So, since the weather seems to be warming a little, being above 7 celcius today, I think the frogs will be delivered on Thursday as expected. I ordered 2 remember, although the tank I have could easily house 4.

Peace

EDIT: I phoned the supplier of said frogs today to order some more gear. Turns out too cold this week and will try next week. Oh well, gives me time to add the new items when they arrive and enough time for the clean up crew to get settled when they arrive. Hopefully the philodendron will fill the rest of the tank floor as ideally I don’t want any soil showing, since they are tree frogs it’s unlikely they will rest on the floor.

I’ve Done it Again!

I’ve gone and fed my addiction by buying some more exotic pets. Thank you for reading my post on my new T! She is doing well, enjoying her little tub and what ever else she does at night.

So, I went and placed a deposit on a couple of red eye tree frogs the other day and paid the remaining balance today. I am quite excited to finally be getting these exotic tropical frogs and have wanted some for a while! I paid for 2 and they will arrive next Thursday hopefully, depending on the weather.

Apparently the babies were born 2021 and are 2cm! My goodness smaller than the tarantula! I bought a pair, even though they had 3 available. These are a communal species. I am waiting for the glass tank to arrive tomorrow. I have already bought the required equipment and tank substrates and plants etc. Just ordered some clean up crew springtails as well. So, quite a bit of post coming over the next week. What a way to start the new year yeah?

Among the equipment purchased and I must say the price was reasonable, however the unreasonable VAT cranked up the price and I really have no idea why they add this when it should not be added for customers. Anyway, among the purchased is a UVB bulb kit which you can place over the top of your vivarium. The vivarium I ordered has a mesh top and the UVB is more for the plants going inside to be honest. Although tree frogs undoubtedly benefit from it as it will help them produce vitamin d3. In case you were wondering, it will be bioactive, meaning the plants are real… hence the UVB and springtails. I will be using special water that has been treated to keep humidity high and substrate moist. A good digital hygrometer works here to monitor, I bought a thermo hygrometer so it measure temperature and humidity in one. I am excited yes.

I will stop at the red eye tree frogs and tarantula as I feel these are good additions to my existing snake collection. I have a spare room for these exotic pets, a sort of reptile room. Given the short lifespan of these frogs I want them to be happy and in a realistic environment so trust me when I say no expense has been spared preparing to set up the tank. The frogs were relatively cheap although I have struggled to find any for a long time. They will be shipped using Walkers Euro Transport I believe.

Stay tuned for more pictures. I will try and upload a clearer picture of the T! Cannot think of a bloody name for her yet.

Peace XOX

T in the Post!

Wow! The postal service really will deliver anything nowadays!

I ordered a brachypelma hamorii (mexican red knee tarantula) online from The Spider Shop as it had a good selection of T’s available and had a good reputation and excellent reviews.

I ordered the tarantula yesterday in the early hours of the morning after perusing for a brazilian black for a few hours and not finding any. Turns out they will be getting some so will probs order one when they come into stock. Anyway, little guy arrived this morning package well and in a little tube. I thought they sent a sling because it was so small. But when the tarantula became visible it was about 5cm and a juvenile. I have no idea if they sent male or female, my preference was female as they live longer.

Wanted a tarantula for a while along with some dart frogs which I’ll be looking at tomorrow. I ordered small black crickets to accompany my order but the store was out of stock so substituted with silent crickets which is absolutely fine with me. It’s food and it was cheap and tasty… joking! Although I might try one later.

I have the little guy in a small plastic tub which I was originally using to keep snakes in when changing tanks. But I have a spare for that. So am using this for the T!

The small hide arrived today which you see in the background. Do not worry she is not that big yet!
She is tiny! So cute, if tarantulas are cute.
This is a bit clearer, using a handheld webcam 😛

As you can see she is tiny. She has a healthy rumpus and when I was unpacking her I was a little nervous but she is a slow moving species unlikely to bite me. *Warning – all tarantulas are venomous, to humans it is not serious unless you are allergic, like a bee sting. It will however kill insects.

I didn’t want to hold her so I just put her straight into the tub when she arrived and she did move a bit but I guess the journey was stressful, she was so tightly packed she wouldn’t have been hurt, that is guaranteed. If you have seen how they pack T’s then you know what I mean.

I need to give the T a name. I haven’t thought of any yet. If you have any suggestions then drop in the comments below. I was thinking of something that would remind me of why I like them, like Aragog! Maybe something more normal like Paladin? What about Mystic H?

Peace!
